Love under the Northern Lights
‘Almost, Maine’ is a couple’s paradise

REVIEW BY JOEL COURTNEY
The Las Cruces Bulletin

No Strings Theatre Company has brought a new play to town for the holiday season, a romantic comedy called “Almost, Maine,” by John Cariani and directed by larrychandler.

Lior Lapid, Indrani Rauth, Cory Dlask, Katie Armijo and Janelle Borsberry star as the entire population of the small non-town in the far north of America. Through 10 separate scenes, the cast enacts the 10 different relationships as the fall in or out of love, discovering themselves as the Northern Lights shine above.

Lapid and Rauth are teamed in half of the mini-stories, while the others are performed by Dlask and Armijo. Both of the couples have a different dynamic, which makes some scenes stronger and makes some less believable. One unique coupling of Lapid and Dlask makes for one of the funniest of the tales, and Borsberry fills in as other parts not directly related to the relationship in question.

Right: Lior Lapid (Lendall) and Indrani Rauth (Gayle) in “Getting it Back”

Each of the stories is quite funny and many are relatable to anyone’s life, from the story of finding an exlover has moved on to trying to win the heart of your best friend, there is sure to be something for everyone. One of the most fun elements of the story is the use of literal idioms, from the “broken heart” to the “other shoe dropping,” clever storytelling makes this piece a fun and light theatrical romp. “Almost, Maine,” is an ideal date play, a perfect way to spend an evening with a special someone, or a good reason to go out for those that love to see an “almost” new play.
