No Srings Theatre Company presents Noël Coward's "A Song At Twilight" opening February 2 and running through February 18 at the Black Box Theatre, 430 N Downtown Mall in Las Cruces. The play is a bittersweet comedy, considered to be Coward's most autobiographical play, and is directed by Les Boyse. Hugo Latymer is a famous writer who, at the start of the play, is in his expensive hotel suite with his wife, Hilde, expecting a dinner guest, actress Carlotta Gray, with whom he had an affair decades earlier and who comes ready to reveal some hidden secrets. Through the use of his typically clever dialogue and plot twists, Coward investigates the complications of living a lie and the difficulties of keeping one's private life private.The London Daily Express called "A Song at Twilight" "Coward at his zenith."
Noël Coward, born in 1899, was a prolific writer , songwriter, and director who contributed enormously to theatre until his death in 1973. His well known works include "Private Lives," "Hay Fever" and "Blithe Spirit." He was knighted in 1970 and received a Tony Award in 1971 for distinguished achievement in theatre. Lord Louis Mountbatten gave a defining description of Noël Coward at his 70th birthday celebration in 1969: "There are probably greater painters than Noël greater novelists than Noël greater librettists, greater composers of music, greater singers, greater dancers, greater comedians, greater tragedians, greater stage producers, greater film directors, greater cabaret artists, greater TV stars. If there are, they are fourteen different people. Only one man combined all fourteen different labels - The Master.
Les Boyse, the director of "A Song At Twilight," directed Coward's "Blithe Spirit" at Las Cruces Comminity Theatre as well as the recent production of "Marley." The production at the Black Box Theatre includes both Las Cruces veterans and newcomers. P.J. Waggaman plays Hugo, the author and Nikka Ziemer plays his wife Hilde. Carlotta is played by Robin Dorfman, and the waiter, Felix, is newcomer Aaron Adler. Teresa Jones makes her stage debut as the Waiter. Scenic and Lighting Designer is Peter Herman, Costume Designer is Jeanne Luper and Ceil Herman is the Producer. Mark Hammersmith is the Stage Manager.
"A Song At Twilight" runs through Sunday, February 18, 2007. Performance times are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., Sundays, February 11 and 18 at 2:30 p.m. and Thursday, February 15 at 7 p.m. Ticket prices are $9.00 regular, $8.00 students and seniors over 65, and all seats on Thursday are $6.00.
